Small Group Outline: The Path to Graduation

Session 1: We are all in this together.

  • Ice breaker/Getting to know you activity (focus on ESL)

  • Transcript verification (We don’t want you to retake classes unnecessarily.)

Session 2: Where do we go from here?

  • Credit mapping (What do I already have?)

  • Strategic class/academy selection (What classes will be offered in summer/after school?)

  • Can I graduate by the time I am 18?

Session 3: Guest speaker: You can do it too.

  • Bring in a positive role model. Someone who has made it to graduation against the odds. (Ceferino, Cristian, Ingrid)

Session 4: Guest speaker: Immigration attorney: You need to finish school.

  • How will finishing school help my immigration case/not finishing school hurt my immigration case?

  • What are my rights as a teen here in the USA?

  • What are my responsibilities as a teen here in the USA?

Session 5: Is there anything I can do to help?

  • Setting SMART goals.

  • Keeping up with your classes.

  • What struggles are you having?

  • How can you advocate for yourself in and out of the classroom?

Session 6: Closing session:

Where do I go from here?

  • I can do this!

  • I will do this!

  • I must do this!

  • Where do I go/What do I do after high school graduation? (This could potentially lead into another small group of college/career readiness / Tech school options / Career counseling, etc.)

I am powerful and capable.

The students of John Overton High School will strive to accomplish their goals and dreams through the support of their teachers and the counseling department.
