When you are used to being in a classroom teaching students, working from home is a whole new thing. Even though, here in Nashville, we haven't gone to a teaching online setting due to lack of equity with our students and internet/technology access, I am still looking for productive ways to earn my keep so to speak. I could sit here and grade all of the things that I didn't have a chance to grade yet. I could partake in some professional development to hone my skills. I could spend this time coming up with some creative lesson plans, but probably the best use of my time while we are out is the time I will spend reaching out to students and their parents to keep them informed and to make sure that they have what they need. I would like to be able to provide resources to my students during this time of uncertainty. I don't mean just food (although that is important). I mean support and a place to turn and a person to talk to. The students need to know that we care about them even when they aren't in school. They are not just a number, sitting in a desk, that is forgotten as soon as they are out of sight. They are human beings with feelings and needs, and I care what happens to them even when they are not in school, even when they are no longer in my class, even when they have gone on to graduate! THEY are the reason that I became a teacher!
